City Gallery Sculpture Trail Map

Wellington City Gallery Sculpture Trail Map

The brief was to create a map for the Wellington City Gallery Sculpture Trail. Target demographic was children 8-14. For this project I looked at appealing to the target demographic by emulating a treasure map. The client requested an illustrative approach over graphic design, so I visualised the Civic Centre as an island, showing the main points of interest as landmarks.
Use of banners and a compass further elude to the treasure map theme. Subtle incorporation of zombie silhouettes are placed within the map to appeal to the demographic and add mystique. The colour scheme was to be light so that it didn’t overtake the line-art, but still vibrant to appeal to the target demographic.
Walking around the civic centre, I noticed that there are a lot of pigeons, and I wanted to incorporate these into the map as an emblem that alludes to the feel of the place. The pirate pigeon I created for the front panel holds a map and telescope and ties in with the theme of the treasure map.
This map has a basic brochure quad-fold and would also work as a poster, so could be taken home by people that have walked the sculpture trail as a souvenir.
